In accordance with AAFCO (Association of American Feed Control Officials) a independent laboratory must analyze all dog and cat food to qualify for proper nutritional guaranteed analysis on the back of all dog and cat food labels. When this analysis takes place all foods whether dry, canned, pouched or frozen must be tested at dry weight. This procedure allows all foods to be compared equally.

To qualify dog food for puppies and reproduction dogs the protein count at dry weight must register a minimum 22% crude protein, 8% crude fat. There is no set recommendations for crude fiber or moisture.

To qualify dog food for adult dogs the protein count at dry weight must register a minimum 18% crude protein, 5% crude fat. There is no set recommendations for crude fiber or moisture.

To qualify cat food for kittens and reproduction cats the protein count at dry weight must register a minimum 30% crude protein, 9% crude fat. There is no recommendation for crude fiber or moisture.

To qualify cat food for adult cats the protein count at dry weight must register a minimum 26% crude protein, 9% crude fat. There is no set recommendations for crude fiber or moister. However, a good cat food should have a quality supplement of B vitamins (Thiamine, Riboflavin, Niacin, Pantothenic Acid, Folic Acid) to promote healthy skin, reproductive and nervous system functions. The analysis printed on the label must display actual analysis to be sold, "as is" not dry weight. This is why the analysis label will read differently on dry and wet dog and cat foods. We at City Dog meet or exceed protein and fat standards.
